A survey history of the Jewish communities of Ashkenaz, from the original settlements in western Europe through the great migration to east-central and eastern Europe. Topics to be covered include the social, economic and religious foundations of the communities, the impact of antisemitism, the rise of Hasidism and the Jewish enlightenment, modern Jewish political movements, the Holocaust, concluding with an assessment of Ashkenazi Jewry in the early 21st century.
Students are welcome to pay what they can, the goal is to have a more meaningful learning experience and setting even a low fee will help keep the intellectual vandals from our gates. Note also that most of the videos included here are already uploaded to my YouTube channel and are publicly available. The advantage of joining the class is that the lectures are carefully organized around the theme of Ashkenaz, students will have the opportunity to take self-testing quizzes and participate in group discussions. I’m also hoping to be more involved here than in the comments section of YouTube, so we can have more productive and significant interaction. Enjoy in good health!
