How did the Jewish people survive the Greek Empire, specifically the onslaught of Hellenistic ideology? Note that while the military victory of the Hasmoneans was certainly a focal point of the existential crisis of Greek thought, but in reality the challenge was far more profound and long-lasting–one might even venture to argue that Judah Maccabee’s pre-eminent contribution was not defeating this philosophical foe, rather bringing it to a stalemate–Jews continued to debate the appropriate admixture of “external wisdom” even to the present day. Describe the principal Jewish Survival Skill utilized by the Jewish people during the Hellenistic era, which extends from the 4th century BCE to the 1st century CE. You may focus on a single moment–the Hanukah rebellion, for example–or an extended discussion. Be sure to both post your own thought, and separately post at least one response/commentary to another survivor’s post. Don’t forget that you can earn Survival Points by talking about contemporary issues! For example, Hellenism: is it still a threat today? (Hint: yes). How is it relevant, and how can we utilize the survival lessons of the ancient Hellenistic period to improve Jewish survival today? Reminder that you are required to post two comments: one point for your own, well-thought approach to the question, and another response to another survivor’s approach.
